Sheriff urges safety as holiday brings people to Shoshone County

Shoshone County Sheriff Issues Memorial Day Weekend Safety Message as Visitors Flood the Region

With Memorial Day weekend drawing thousands of visitors into Shoshone County, the county’s top law enforcement official is asking guests and residents alike to prioritize safety while enjoying the Silver Valley’s outdoor offerings.

Shoshone County Sheriff Shawn Wehr issued a public message earlier this week ahead of what is expected to be one of the busiest recreational weekends of the year for the county. Rivers, trails, campgrounds, and backcountry areas across the region are all anticipated to see heavy use over the coming days.

“We know many of you will be heading to the rivers, trails, campgrounds, mountains, and communities throughout the county,” Wehr said in his statement, citing destinations including the North Fork, Moon Pass, Dobson Pass, Wallace, Kellogg, Pinehurst, Kingston, and Mullan. “We’re not here to ruin anyone’s fun — we simply want everyone to have a great holiday weekend and make it home safely.”

Increased Patrols Planned Across the County

Residents and visitors should expect a visible and expanded law enforcement presence throughout the long weekend. Sheriff’s deputies will be active not only along major travel corridors but also in more remote backcountry locations as outdoor activity spreads beyond the county’s main routes. The expanded patrol footprint is designed to improve response times and maintain safety in areas that may see unfamiliar or unprepared visitors.

Wehr laid out a list of specific safety guidelines for anyone planning to spend time in Shoshone County over the holiday. Those reminders include exercising extra caution near waterways, refraining from drinking and driving, practicing fire safety with any campfires, packing out all garbage from campsites, and letting someone know your planned destination before heading into the backcountry.

The sheriff also flagged traffic as a potential challenge, noting that heavy vehicle volume is expected both Friday and Sunday as travelers move in and out of the county. Drivers are encouraged to remain patient on area roadways. Given Shoshone County’s position along I-90 and its access to popular recreation zones, weekend congestion is a recurring concern during major holidays. A fatal pedestrian crash on I-90 near Mullan investigated by Idaho State Police earlier this year underscored how quickly conditions can turn dangerous on the region’s roadways.

A Reminder to Honor the Holiday’s Meaning

Beyond recreational safety, Wehr used the message to call attention to the significance of Memorial Day itself — a holiday set aside to honor the members of the U.S. military who gave their lives in service to the country.

The sheriff also extended recognition to the public safety personnel who will be working throughout the weekend rather than spending it with their own families. “Please take time this Memorial Day to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country,” Wehr said, adding thanks to first responders, dispatchers, fire personnel, emergency medical crews, search and rescue volunteers, and public works employees on duty over the holiday.

Those traveling through or recreating in Shoshone County are reminded that law enforcement personnel encountered throughout the weekend — whether on patrol or responding to an incident — are working under heightened demand and should be treated with respect.

For those spending the weekend closer to town, authorities throughout the county will also be watching for impaired driving and other violations. Recent jail booking records from Shoshone County have reflected a steady number of DUI and drug-related arrests, and holiday weekends historically see upticks in those types of incidents statewide.

What Comes Next

Sheriff’s Office deputies will maintain increased patrols through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Residents and visitors with non-emergency concerns can contact the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office directly. Anyone facing a life-threatening emergency should call 911. The Sheriff’s Office is expected to resume standard patrol levels following the holiday weekend.
