Idaho State Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-90 Near Mullan

MULLAN, Idaho — Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 90 near Mullan after a woman was struck and killed by a semi-truck in the early morning hours of Friday, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:52 a.m. near milepost 64 in the eastbound lane of I-90, according to Idaho State Police. A red semi-truck, driven by a 30-year-old man from Mountlake Terrace, Washington, was traveling eastbound on I-90 when it struck a woman who was in the roadway.

The woman’s identity has not been publicly released. Idaho State Police did not immediately disclose the circumstances that led to the woman being on the interstate at that hour.

Emergency Response Shuts Down Eastbound I-90

Eastbound I-90 near the scene was closed for approximately three and a half hours while emergency responders and investigators worked the crash site. The closure affected one of the primary travel corridors through the Silver Valley, a stretch of I-90 that runs through some of the most rugged terrain in northern Idaho near the Idaho-Montana border.

Mullan sits near the eastern end of Shoshone County, just miles from Lookout Pass and the Montana state line. The community, long defined by its mining heritage and mountain setting, relies heavily on I-90 as its main artery for commerce and daily travel. Any extended closure on that corridor carries significant impacts for residents and commercial traffic moving through the region.

The semi-truck driver, whose name was not released by authorities, was cooperating with investigators, according to available information. No additional details about the driver’s condition or status were released at the time of this report.

Idaho State Police Seek Public Information

Idaho State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information about the incident to contact investigators directly. Corporal Daniel Taylor is leading the inquiry and can be reached at 208-209-8620.

Authorities have not indicated whether alcohol, distraction, or other factors played a role in the crash. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Fatal pedestrian crashes on Idaho interstates are a serious and persistent public safety concern, particularly on rural stretches of highway where lighting is limited and emergency response times can be extended due to distance. The stretch of I-90 running through Shoshone County traverses mountainous terrain where conditions can change rapidly, and pedestrian activity on the interstate — particularly in the early morning hours — poses extreme dangers.

Law enforcement officials regularly caution the public about the life-threatening risk of being on foot anywhere along an active interstate highway corridor. Pedestrians on interstates, regardless of circumstances, are placed in immediate danger given travel speeds and the limited visibility available to commercial truck drivers in low-light conditions.

Shoshone County residents with concerns about public safety incidents in the area are encouraged to monitor updates from Idaho State Police.
