Idaho Secretary of State Mails Election Pamphlets to Households

Idaho election officials have begun distributing hundreds of thousands of informational pamphlets to households across the state ahead of the 2026 general election. The mailings mark the start of the official voter outreach effort for the upcoming November vote.

Secretary of State Phil McGrane announced the distribution, noting that every household in Idaho should expect to receive the document. “Election season is underway,” McGrane said. He emphasized that the pamphlet provides the necessary details for voters to prepare for Election Day.

Ballot Measures Detailed

The official voter pamphlet outlines several key ballot questions appearing on the 2026 ballot. Voters will find information regarding Proposition 1, an initiative seeking to end the state’s abortion ban and establish reproductive rights protections.

Other measures include a proposed constitutional amendment that would restrict the authority to legalize drugs solely to the Legislature. Another constitutional amendment proposes declaring English as the official language of the state. Additionally, an advisory question asks voters whether Idaho should designate a state gun.

The pamphlet also includes essential logistical information, such as election dates, voting options, and voter registration details. However, the document does not contain information about candidates running for office.

Persistent Format Debate

The distribution of the traditional voter pamphlet continues despite previous legislative efforts to change the format. In both 2023 and 2024, the Idaho Legislature declined to approve Secretary McGrane’s proposed bill that would have replaced the current pamphlet with a state-issued voter guide.

Public opinion on the matter has shifted in recent years. A 2024 poll conducted by Boise State University found that 78% of Idahoans favored a state-issued voter guide over the existing pamphlet system. Despite this majority preference, lawmakers have not acted to implement the change.

The current edition of the pamphlet is titled “America 250,” celebrating 250 years of American history. The document serves as the primary source of official ballot information for Idaho voters in the lead-up to the November election.
