Idaho BLM to Temporarily Close Coeur d’Alene Recreation Sites Beginning April 13 for Facility Upgrades

The Bureau of Land Management’s Coeur d’Alene Field Office will temporarily close several popular North Idaho recreation sites beginning April 13 as crews replace aging picnic infrastructure across the region. The closures, which are expected to run through May 29, will affect a handful of well-used outdoor destinations near Coeur d’Alene, according to officials.

The project involves the replacement of 40 barbecues, 60 fire rings, and 100 picnic tables across multiple sites. The BLM Coeur d’Alene Field Office, known as BLMCDA, said the temporary closures are necessary to support the safe and efficient completion of the work. Individual sites will only be closed for a few days at a time, limiting the overall impact to outdoor recreationists who rely on these facilities during the spring and summer seasons.

Which Sites Are Affected and When

The first site to receive upgrades will be Huckleberry Campground, which is scheduled to be closed from April 13 through April 24. Following that initial closure, crews will move on to a series of additional recreation areas across the region.

The remaining sites slated for improvements include Blackwell Island Boat Launch and Day Use, Killarney Campground and Boat Launch, Mineral Ridge Trailhead, Beauty Bay Recreation Area, and Mica Bay Boaters Park. As noted by the BLM, each of those locations will face only brief closures as the work is completed, with the entire project expected to wrap up no later than May 29.

Visitors planning trips to any of these sites over the coming weeks are encouraged to check the BLM Coeur d’Alene Field Office’s Facebook page for the most current information on closure schedules and reopening dates before heading out.

Great American Outdoors Act Funding Makes Upgrades Possible

The infrastructure improvements are being funded through the Great American Outdoors Act, a federal law designed to expand public access to outdoor recreation, improve visitor experiences, and address long-standing maintenance backlogs on federally managed lands. The act has directed significant resources toward deferred maintenance projects at recreation sites across the country, and the Coeur d’Alene-area upgrades represent a direct benefit of that funding reaching North Idaho communities.

The recreation sites targeted for improvement are popular destinations for boating, camping, hiking, and day-use activities in the greater Coeur d’Alene area, drawing visitors from across North Idaho and beyond. Upgraded fire rings, barbecue units, and picnic tables will extend the useful life of these facilities and improve the experience for families and outdoor enthusiasts who use them each season.

For residents of Shoshone County and the broader Silver Valley, these recreation corridors serve as important gateways to the outdoor economy that drives tourism throughout the region. Well-maintained public lands infrastructure supports everything from weekend camping trips to the broader recreation economy that communities along I-90 depend on. What Comes Next

Work is set to begin at Huckleberry Campground on April 13, with crews progressing through the full list of sites through late May. The BLM expects all affected recreation areas to be fully reopened and available to the public by May 29, 2026, well ahead of the peak summer recreation season.

Outdoor enthusiasts with questions or those wishing to monitor specific site closure and reopening timelines are advised to follow the BLM Coeur d’Alene Field Office on Facebook for real-time updates throughout the project.
