Fatal Pedestrian Strike on Interstate 90 Near Mullan, Idaho Under Investigation by Idaho State Police

A woman is dead following a pre-dawn crash on Interstate 90 near Mullan, Idaho, after she was struck by a semi-truck in the eastbound lanes of the highway, the Idaho State Police reported Thursday.

The Idaho State Police is investigating the fatal collision, which occurred at approximately 1:52 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2026, near milepost 64 on eastbound Interstate 90 in Shoshone County. The crash involved a red semi-truck and a female pedestrian who was on the roadway at the time of the strike.

The semi-truck was driven by a 30-year-old male from Mountlake Terrace, Washington, who was traveling eastbound on I-90 when the vehicle struck the woman. The pedestrian succumbed to her injuries at the scene. As of the time of the report, she had not been positively identified by authorities.

Eastbound I-90 Lanes Closed for Hours Following Crash

The fatal crash prompted a significant response from emergency responders and investigators in the early morning hours near Mullan, a small community in the eastern end of the Silver Valley along the Idaho-Montana border. The eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 were blocked for approximately three and a half hours as law enforcement worked to secure the scene and conduct their investigation.

Interstate 90 is a vital east-west corridor through Shoshone County, connecting the Silver Valley communities of Wallace, Kellogg, Osburn, and Mullan to the rest of northern Idaho and the broader Northwest. Commercial truck traffic is heavy along this stretch of highway, which serves as a primary freight route through the region.

A closure of the eastbound lanes for several hours in the middle of the night would have affected overnight commercial traffic moving through the mountain corridor near Lookout Pass, one of the more challenging winter driving segments on I-90 in northern Idaho.

Idaho State Police Seeking Witnesses and Information

The Idaho State Police District 1 office, which covers Northern Idaho including Shoshone County, is actively seeking the public’s assistance in gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information regarding this crash is asked to contact Corporal Daniel Taylor of the Idaho State Police at 208-209-8620.

Investigators have not yet released details regarding the identity of the deceased pedestrian, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. The circumstances that led to the woman being on the roadway at that location in the early morning hours remain part of the active investigation.

Idaho State Police District 1 is headquartered in Coeur d’Alene and serves Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, and Shoshone counties across Northern Idaho. The district handles major crash investigations on the federal highway corridors that cross the region, including the heavily traveled I-90 corridor through the Silver Valley.

The crash is among several pedestrian-involved fatalities that have drawn attention to the hazards facing individuals on or near high-speed interstate highways. Law enforcement has consistently emphasized that I-90 and similar corridors carry vehicles traveling at highway speeds and can pose extreme danger to anyone on foot in or near the lanes of travel, particularly during overnight hours when visibility is limited.

What Comes Next

The Idaho State Police investigation into the fatal crash near Mullan is ongoing. Authorities will continue working to positively identify the deceased pedestrian and notify her family. Investigators will also work to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the collision. The results of the investigation may be referred to the appropriate prosecuting authority depending on findings. Members of the public with information relevant to the case are encouraged to contact Corporal Daniel Taylor at the Idaho State Police District 1 office at 208-209-8620 as soon as possible.
