Tuesday, May 26, marks 30 years since Bunker Hill stack demolition

Tuesday, May 26, marked the 30th anniversary of the demolition of the Bunker Hill smokestack, one of the most recognizable — and controversial — structures in Silver Valley history.

The towering smokestack, long associated with the Bunker Hill smelting complex near Smelterville, stood for decades as a symbol of the region’s industrial mining identity before coming down in 1996. Its demolition closed a chapter on an era of large-scale smelting operations that had defined the economic and physical landscape of Shoshone County for generations.

The Bunker Hill operation was once among the largest lead and zinc smelting facilities in the country. Its legacy remains deeply woven into Silver Valley culture — a reminder of both the prosperity and the environmental consequences the industry brought to northern Idaho. Learn more about that history in our reporting on Silver Valley’s mining legacy and lead contamination history, and on the ancient geological forces that built the Silver Valley’s ore deposits.
