Fatality Crash on SH 200, near Clark Fork

One Dead, One Hospitalized After Single-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 200 Near Clark Fork, Idaho

A Saturday morning crash on State Highway 200 near Clark Fork, Idaho claimed the life of one person and sent another to the hospital, according to the Idaho State Police. The collision occurred in Bonner County at approximately 6:22 a.m. on May 2, 2026, and remains under active investigation.

What Happened on SH 200

Idaho State Police investigators determined that a Hyundai Equus was traveling eastbound on SH 200 when the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a rock face. The vehicle was occupied by two individuals: a 45-year-old female driver from San Pedro, California, and a 65-year-old male passenger from Union City, California.

The female driver was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital via ground ambulance. The male passenger was not wearing a seatbelt. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Next of kin has been notified, according to Idaho State Police.

The crash forced traffic on SH 200 down to a single lane of travel for approximately four hours while emergency responders treated the injured, conducted their investigation, and cleared the scene.

Drugs or Alcohol May Be a Factor

Idaho State Police reported that evidence found at the scene indicates drugs and/or alcohol may have been involved in the crash. That evidence is included as part of the ongoing investigation, and no further details regarding the nature of that evidence were released.

The crash is being handled by Idaho State Police District 1, which covers Northern Idaho and serves Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties. Questions related to the investigation can be directed to the District 1 office in Coeur d’Alene.

The seatbelt disparity between the two occupants is a stark reminder of the life-or-death difference personal safety equipment can make in a serious collision. Idaho law requires seatbelt use for all vehicle occupants, and law enforcement officials have long emphasized that compliance significantly increases survival rates in crashes of this nature.

A Pattern of Deadly Crashes in the Region

The fatality near Clark Fork is the latest in a series of deadly incidents along Northern Idaho roadways in recent months. Shoshone County and the surrounding region have seen multiple fatal crashes along major corridors, drawing attention to highway safety throughout the Silver Valley and beyond.

Readers can review coverage of a previous fatal crash near Mullan on Interstate 90 and a separate incident in which a woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 90 near Mullan for additional context on recent public safety concerns along Northern Idaho’s major highway routes.

State Highway 200 runs along the northern edge of Lake Pend Oreille and connects communities in Bonner County.
